Dance Your Way To Better Health
October 10th, 2008
Like that famous bunny in the battery commercial, the Lexington Athletic Club Energizers just keep going, and going, and going. This dance group is composed of 15 dancers with ages ranging from 52 to 83! Mind you, each one has his or her share of health problems, such as arthritis, bursitis, knee replacements and back surgeries, but dancing has kept them so alive and kicking!
The group began in 1993 as an exercise class for seniors, headed by dance instructor Mary Jo Holland. Now, they practice three times a week and perform at least three or four times a month, for nursing homes, adult day care facilities, retirement homes, and schools. Holland said, “We like to think of ourselves as Dancing with the Stars without the costumes.”
Interested? The only requirement, aside from being a member of the Lexington Athletic Club, is being able to stand on two legs and breathe! Having a little rhythm is also advisable. The Energizers’ dance repertoire range from country to jazz, from 50s rock to Broadway, so there’s always something for everyone.
But it’s not just about the dance. The members have become so close to each other that they are like fa amily, supporting each other through the joys and sorrows. It has reminded them that life can still be fun despite their age and health.
So go ahead, pick up those dancing shoes, and dance your way to a better health!
